Cutting Crew - I Just Died In Your Arms

* 제법 따듯했던 하루가 지나고 다시 쌀쌀한 밤이 되었네요.^^ 모두 건강 조심하시기 바랍니다. 자! 오늘 소개해 드릴 곡은 1980년대 중반 영국에서 결성된 4인조 밴드 "커팅 크루(Cutting Crew)" 의 히트곡! "I Just Died In Your Arms" 입니다. 이 곡은 모 커피 광고의 CM으로 쓰이며 한국에서도 크게 인기를 끌었던 곡입니다. 사실, 저도 처음에는 노래만 알고 곡명조차 몰랐었는데 시간이 지나서야(중학생 시절 쯤?) 곡명을 알게 되었던 기억이 납니다. 커팅 크루는 밴드명에 대한 의미있는 일화가 있는데요.. 이들 멤버 모두는 밴드를 결성하기 전에 꽤 유명한 "세션맨(메인가수를 뒤에서 지원해 주는 역할)" 이었다고 합니다. 하지만! 어디까지나 세션맨은 무대의 중심이 될 수가 없었던 것! 그리하여 이들이 모여 결정한 팀명이 바로 "커팅 크루(Cutting Crew 잘린 패거리? 혹은 떨거지)" 였던 것입니다.

 냉정히 말해, 주제 파악을 제대(?)로 하고 밴드명을 정했던 것이죠. 농담입니다.^^ 그러나, 이들의 노래인 "I Just Died In Your Arms" 는 1986년 미국을 시작으로 해 자국인 영국 차트에서도 "4위(미국에서는 1위)" 에 오르는 기염을 토하게 됩니다. 2인자의 설움에서 벗어나는 감격적인 순간을 맛본 것이라 할 수 있습니다. 그렇게 1980년대를 넘어 한 동안 밴드를 꾸려 나가던 이들은 1993년 해체를 겪게 되는데요. "I Just Died In Your Arms" 를 제외하고는 이렇다 할만한 히트곡이 나오지 않아 "원히트 원더(One Hit Wonder, 1곡만 인기를 얻게 된 뮤지션)" 의 전형적인 모습을 보여주는 것 같아 안타까웠습니다.

 

Tip - 2006년 Cutting Crew는 재결성이 됐습니다. 큰 활약을 보이지 못하고 있지만, 어찌됐든 2인자의 그늘에서 벗어난 모습 아닙니까?^^ 앞으로 더욱 좋은 노래를 들려주길 바라며.. 모두 편히 감상하시길 바랍니다.^^
